LESSON 2: CONSTELLATIONS

A constellation is a group of stars that has been named and resembles a specific shape in the sky. These stars are a long way away from Earth. They are in no way related to one another. Some stars in a constellation may be very close to one another, while others may be very far away.

〰️Iba iba sila (yung stars) ng distansya pero pag pinagdugtong mo sila thru drawing lines sa pagitan nila at ginamit mo yung imagination mo. Makakabuo ka ng object, animals, or person.

๐Ÿ“œ88 yung recognized constellations, according to NASA.

๐Ÿ“œThese constellations are used as reference points by astronomers because they can be seen by both trained and amateur stargazers. It is also easier to visualize a star as belonging to a specific constellation than speaking of its exact location in the sky.

๐Ÿ“œEdmond Halley (1656-1742), a British astronomer, discovered that stars move; they change locations, but their movement across space is not easily recognized because they are so far away.

〰️ Mayroon tayong tinatawag na Circumpolar Constellations, sila yung mga constellations na nakikita natin buong taon.

Sa Northern Hemisphere, sila yung mga circumpolar constellations:

✨ Ursa Major (Big Bear)

✨ Ursa Minor (Little Bear)

✨ Cassiopeia (The Queen)

✨ Cygnus (The Swan)

๐Ÿ“œUrsa Major, sometimes known as the Big Bear, is the third-largest and most visible constellation. The seven-star dipper, often known as the Big Dipper asterism, is more well-known. An asterism is a collection of stars that is recognized but not officially acknowledged. Some asterisms straddle constellations and do not belong to a single constellation.

๐Ÿ“œThe trapezoid body of the Big Dipper receives four stars, while the handle receives three. The trapezoid's two stars, Dubhe and Merak, point to Polaris, the North Star. Polaris can be found at the tip of Ursa Minor's handle. Ursa Major's asterism is the Big Dipper.

๐Ÿ“œUrsa Minor is a smaller variant of Ursa Major, sometimes known as the Little Bear. It also has seven stars on it, with four for the body and three for the handle. Polaris, the star at the handle's tip, aids in the identification of true north.

〰️ Si POLARIS is yung northern star.

Cassiopeia is the 25th biggest constellation and is named after a queen in Greek mythology.

๐Ÿ“œ The five-star asterism that forms the letter W is known as Cassiopeia.

๐Ÿ“œ The 16th largest constellation, Cygnus (Latin for Swan), is known for its asterism, which forms a cross and is known as the Northern Cross. Deneb, at its tail, and Albireo, at its head, are its two brightest stars.

〰️ Proceed na tayo sa southern hemisphere. Sa southern hemisphere, walang reference point tulad nung sa polaris.

Yung mga circumpolar constellations dito ay ang mga sumusunod:

✨Crux or Southern Cross

✨Carina

✨ Centaurus

+Crux+

The Latin word crux means "cross." It is known as the Southern Cross because it is visible in the Southern Hemisphere sky. It is the smallest of the 88 constellations. The Crux was once regarded a part of the constellation Centaurus, but it was later separated.

〰️Carina

๐Ÿ“œCarina is the Latin word for "keel," which refers to the bottom of a boat. It was once a part of the broader Argo Navis constellation devised by Greek philosopher Ptolemy. The keel of the boat is formed by Carina, the stern (back) is formed by Pupis, and the sails are formed by Vela.

๐Ÿ“œThe Argo Navis was considered to be too huge in terms of coverage by astronomers, thus it was deconstructed into three separate constellations: Carina is the 34th largest. Canopus, the second brightest star in the constellation Carina, aids spacecraft navigation.

๐Ÿ“œIn Greek mythology, Centaurus is a half-man, half-horse creature. It is the ninth-largest constellation in the sky. It is made up of 11 stars, with Alpha Centauri and Beta Centauri being the brightest. The fourth brightest star is Alpha Centauri, and the tenth brightest is Beta Centauri.

〰️Yung Philippines, located tayo malapit sa equator kaya pwede nating makita yung constellations of both Northern and Southern Hemispheres like Orion, Canis Major, Canis Minor, and Pegasus.
