LESSON 2: TERRESTRIAL/INNER PLANETS

🌌 Sa kasalukuyan, mayroon tayong 8 planets na nag-oorbit sa ating Sun

They can be classified sa dalawang categories, inner planets and outer planets

πŸ“ The inner, rocky planets are the following:
Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars.

πŸ“Yung outer planets naman:
» Gas Giants:
Jupiter and Saturn
» Ice Giants:
 Uranus and Neptune

Let us start sa Mercury

Name of Planet: MERCURY

Planet Type: Inner Planet/Terrestrial Planet

Number of Moons: 0

Day: 176 Earth days

Year: 88 Earth days

Description:

  • Mercury is named after the fastest of the ancient Roman gods, Mercury.
  • The Sun would appear more than three times as large from the surface of Mercury as it does from Earth, and the sunlight would be up to seven times brighter.
  • The surface temperatures of Mercury are both extremely hot and extremely cold. Daytime temperatures on the planet can reach 800°F (430°C) located close to the Sun. Temperatures can drop to -290°F (-180°C) without an atmosphere to keep the heat in during the night.
  • Mercury, despite its close proximity to the Sun, is not the hottest planet in our solar system; that description applies to Venus, due to its dense atmosphere

Name of Planet: VENUS

Planet Type: Inner Planet/Terrestrial Planet

Number of Moons: 0

Day: 243 Earth days

Year: 225 Earth days

Description:

  • Named after the Goddess of Love, Venus. It is the only planet named after a female god.
  • It is the hottest planet in our solar system because of its thick atmosphere, which traps heat in a greenhouse effect.
  • Venus spins slowly in the opposite direction as the rest of the planets.
  • Venus is Earth's closest planetary neighbor and the second planet from the Sun.
  • It's one of the four inner, terrestrial (or rocky) planets, and it's often referred to as Earth's twin because of its size and density. However, these are not identical twins; there are significant differences between the two worlds.
  • Venus has a thick, toxic atmosphere that is filled with carbon dioxide, and it is perpetually shrouded in thick, yellowish clouds of sulfuric acid that trap heat and cause a greenhouse effect that is uncontrollable.
  • Even though Mercury is closer to the Sun, Venus is the hottest planet in our solar system. Venus's surface temperature is around 900 degrees Fahrenheit (475 degrees Celsius), which is hot enough to melt lead.

Name of Planet: EARTH

Planet Type: Inner Planet/Terrestrial Planet

Number of Moons: 1

Day: 23.9 hours

Year: 365.25 Days

Description:

  • Our planet is the third planet from the Sun, and it is the only place we know of that is inhabited by living things so far.
  • Although Earth is only the fifth largest planet in our solar system, it is the only one with liquid water on its surface. Earth, which is slightly larger than nearby Venus, is the largest of the four planets closest to the Sun, all of which are composed of rock and metal.
  • The name Earth has been in use for at least 1,000 years. Except for Earth, all of the planets were named after Greek and Roman gods and goddesses. The name Earth, on the other hand, is a Germanic word that simply means "the ground."
  • Earth has a very hospitable temperature and chemical mix, which has resulted in an abundance of life.
  •  Most notably, Earth is unique in that liquid water covers the majority of our planet because the temperature allows liquid water to exist for extended periods of time. Around 3.8 billion years ago, Earth's vast oceans provided a convenient place for life to begin.

Name of Planet: MARS

Planet Type: Inner Planet/Terrestrial Planet

Number of Moons: 2

Day: 24.6 hours

Year: 1.88 Earth Years

Description:
  • The ancient Romans named Mars after their god of war because its reddish color reminded them of blood. Other civilizations named the planet after this feature as well; for example, the Egyptians called it "Her Desher," which means "the red one." Even today, it is commonly referred to as the "Red Planet" because iron minerals in Martian dirt oxidize, or rust, causing the surface to appear red.
  • Phobos and Deimos, two small moons of Mars, could be captured asteroids. They're shaped like potatoes because they have too little mass to be spherical due to gravity. The moons were named after the horses that drew the chariot of Ares, the Greek god of war.
  • The surface of Phobos, the innermost and largest moon, is heavily cratered, with deep grooves. It is slowly approaching Mars and will either collide with it or break up in 50 million years.
  • Deimos is roughly half the size of Phobos and orbits Mars two and a half times farther away. Deimos is oddly shaped and covered in loose dirt, which frequently fills the craters on its surface, making it appear smoother than pockmarked Phobos.
